Wynnum’s new Head of Goalkeeping, Dean May, is on a mission to see today’s junior goalkeepers at Wolves filling our club’s top team spots in future seasons.
One of the most highly credentialled goalkeeper coaches in the country, May is relishing the opportunity to once again step into a full-time goalkeeper coaching role which will allow him to follow his great passion of coaching, mentoring and identifying young goalkeepers.
May will initially guide the development of Wynnum’s Pathways, Academy and NPL Men’s and FQPL Women’s goalkeepers and will also work on building a framework that will improve the entire goalkeeper training footprint at Wynnum.
A game-changer for May will be the addition of a dedicated goalkeeper training area at Carmichael Park, the completion of which has been hindered by the persistent wet weather in Brisbane this year.
While May takes over the Head of Goalkeeping role at Wynnum, he will still be working alongside his great mate — fellow goalkeeper coach, Frank Monteverde — who has filled the role for the club over the past two years while also balancing the demands of running his own full-time business interests. A priority will also be to develop more goalkeeper coaches at the club.
WWFC Director of Football, Richard Greer, is excited that the club has been able to elevate the goalkeeping space at Wolves by adding a full-time coaching position. The fact that a coach of May’s calibre was available to fill that role is a massive coup for the club.
“We’re delighted to have Dean on board with us to drive our goalkeeper training to the next level,” Greer said. “Like everything we are doing at Wolves, the focus is building our players — and our coaches — from the ground up. More than anything else we want to see an abundance of Wynnum juniors filling our senior men’s and women’s teams in future seasons.”
The holder of UEFA A / FFA Level 3 Goalkeeper Licences, May’s previous roles have included stints with Football Federation Australia as the National Goalkeeper Development Manager, with the Brisbane Roar Academy as Head of Goalkeeping and most recently as Head of Goalkeeping at Gold Coast Knights FC.
While goalkeeping is his primary focus, May also holds a UEFA A Licence. He was Head Coach of the Men’s Football Program at the Tasmanian Institute of Sport for 8 years, where three players earned A-League contracts.
He is also an active member of the AFC elite goalkeeper instructors and has completed goalkeeper coaching courses in India, Singapore, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan for the AFC. He also holds roles as Assistant/Goalkeeper Coach to the Guam National Women’s Team and the Men’s National and U23 squads of Bangladesh.
