Community and family are two words that are used quite a lot around the Wynnum Wolves Football Club. It’s been that way for 100 years. In 2021, the club’s Centenary Year, the concept of looking out for your mates and members of your community is being put front and centre courtesy of a new partnership.

Wynnum Wolves FC has just signed up to join the Outside the Locker Room program which supports connections through conversations and education around mental health and other social issues.

Wynnum Wolves FC First team player, Josh Murphy – who has joined the Wolves family as both a player and coach this year – is a Queensland program facilitator for Outside the Locker Room and has also put his hand up to be an ongoing Mental Health and Wellbeing Ambassador for the club. Josh has already formed a strong connection with the groups he has been involved with at Wolves this season and extended that influence club-wide this month (September) when he led a whole-of-club session on mental health awareness at the Carmichael Park clubrooms on 1 September.

Josh – who has been involved in numerous different sports at a high level, including football, cricket and Australian football – is a true believer in one of the core pillars of the Outside the Locker Room program: the concept that sport is much more than just a game. Rather, involvement in sporting clubs is the perfect platform for people to make important connections, find mateship and a ready-built support network both on and off the field of play.

It’s never too late to get started on your coaching journey in football. There is a huge shortage of experience, skilled and accredited coaches in Brisbane, which is why the Wynnum Wolves committee made a decision to invest significantly in coach education.

Wynnum Wolves FC Technical Director, Claudio Canosa, is always keen to speak to anyone who has a passion for football, a genuine desire and interest in coaching, and the time and motivation to make a commitment to the club.

“If you have a love for football, coaching is a very rewarding thing to pursue to contribute to the development and growth of young players.”

One of the aims of Wynnum Wolves is to foster the development of more home-grown coaches who are keen to get involved in the club at a community level. Much like player progressions, coaches who have a genuine passion for the game can start at community level and then progress to coaching higher-level teams as their experience grows.

Wynnum Scott McDonald

Wynnum Wolves Football Club has been excited to welcome former international, A-League and Socceroos striker, Scott McDonald, to the club as a guest coach during the 2021 season.

A seasoned striker whose professional playing career has spanned two decades and two continents – including successful stints in both the English Premier League and the Scottish top-flight – McDonald is now dipping his toe into the realm of coaching by pursuing this A Licence ang giving back to the game at junior level.

Scott linked with Wolves in July to conduct a successful junior school holiday camp at the club and has since been engaged as a guest coach to work with the club’s front-third players.

Always known for his strong self-belief and positive energy as a player, McDonald is bringing that same energy and enthusiasm to the training pitch at Carmichael Park, working with nominated players from the club’s Under 12s SAP group through to members of Wynnum Wolves’ Senior squad. And Wynnum’s young players are lapping up the experience.

“This is not only a fantastic learning experience for our young players, but also for our young coaches.”   Claudio Canosa

Wolves Technical Director, Claudio Canosa, said the addition of Scott as a guest coach was part of the club’s philosophy to give great “value-added” experiences to players across the club.

“This is not only a fantastic learning experience for our young players, but also for our young coaches,” said Canosa, who has welcomed other club coaches to observe the sessions.

“Scott has a lot of energy and personality as a coach. He’s played at the highest level. He’s known as a successful goalscorer. The great thing is he’s not only coaching, but he’s also able to demonstrate the skills he’s teaching.”

Canosa said it was exciting to be able to present to players another voice and perspective – especially from someone of Scott’s experience, stature, and currency in the game.

“It’s something we want to continue to do at our club to give our young players and coaches as many quality learning experiences as we can,” Canosa said.

“We are very lucky to have two former Socceroos in Scott and First Team coach Frank Farina, working with our players at the moment. It’s a rare opportunity, and it is exciting to be able to bring this level of coaching to Wolves,” he said.

Two significant dedications, made during the course of what was a rolling feast of special Centenary events for Wynnum Wolves Football Club during 2021, well and truly lifted a pair of celebrated favourite sons – Eddie Wilkins and Wayne Gracey – to Legend Status at Wynnum.

Both Gracey and Wikins have spent the better part of their lives tethered to their beloved Wynnum Wolves across a myriad of roles – those of player, coach, administrator, club president and at times – even saviour.

For Gracey, the 2021 Centenary year was his 50th year of continuous involvement at Wynnum as coach of the Under 20 Men’s Divisional team. He also served as somewhat of a savant in helping current club officials recall, record and share the rich history of the 100-year club.

After several break-ins at Carmichael Park last year, resulting in theft and mindless vandalism, national shipping container company Royal Wolf stepped in, donating a shipping container to store and secure equipment.

It was a great gesture from a company who not only recognised Wynnum Wolves’ contribution to the community, but wanted play a role in keeping spirits high for the many volunteers who give their time for the greater good of grassroots sport.
