Wynnum Wolves vs Sunshine Coast Wanderers

The pressure will be firmly on Wynnum’s NPL Men at the Wolf Den on Sunday to get their season back on track following a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Young Roar in the last league outing at home. A dismal first half had Wolves 2-0 down at the break, and despite positive changes in the second half, they could not claw their way back into the match, losing 2-1.

Putting that result behind them, the Wynnum squad will be hoping to take the momentum of a strong midweek Australia Cup win over Broadbeach (5-2) into today’s game. Striker Luke Francis netted a hat-trick on Wednesday night against the FQPL 1 ladder leaders, while winger Jez Lofthouse came off the bench to score his first for the black and yellow from an exciting solo run.

The win was a shot in the arm for Wolves, who have lacked consistency this season and struggled to make the most of the chances they have created. They will, however, face a buoyant Sunshine Coast Wanderers team on Sunday, who unexpectedly toppled last year’s Premiers, Gold Coast Knights, in the last round 2-0. Knights battled with 10 men for the majority of the match due to a first-half send-off.

The win sees Sunshine Coast Wanderers sit level with Wolves on the NPL ladder, but above them on goal difference, making today’s match-up a mouth-watering contest. Both teams will have plenty to play for as they fight to move above the congested lower half of the ladder.

The NPL Men’s match will kick off at 6.15pm on Wayne Gracey Field, with the NPL 23s match starting at 3:45pm. Watch live here
