FRANK FARINA

FIRST TEAM HEAD COACH

Former Socceroos striker and coach, Frank Farina, joined Wynnum Wolves FC in mid-2021 to help guide a young and inexperienced Wynnum first team in the second-tier Football Queensland Premier League competition in Brisbane.

A decorated international player and previous national coach of the Socceroos, Papua New Guinea and Fiji, Frank is one of Queensland’s favourite footballing identities and is widely recognised for putting Brisbane football on the map when, in 1996/97, he led the Brisbane Strikers to a National Soccer League Championship as a captain / coach.

Born in Darwin but growing up in Cairns, Frank started his senior playing career with Mareeba in the Queensland State League competition – ironically making his senior debut against Wynnum back in 1981.

In another twist of football fate, Frank’s assistant coach at the Strikers in 1996/97, Peter Tokesi, also boasts a proud Wynnum connection as he went on to coach us to a drought-breaking maiden Brisbane Premiership title in 2001.

Frank has linked with a former NSL nemesis, Argentinian Claudio Canosa, to work with the young and inexperienced Wynnum squad during the club’s centenary season, renewing a football friendship stretching back to his time at the Brisbane Strikers.

Frank has been the Wynnum club’s ambassador for the past two seasons and is excited to be contributing at the grassroots level of the sport in his home state.

CLAUDIO CANOSA

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

There are few more qualified Technical Directors in the country than Wynnum Wolves FC’s Claudio Canosa.

Originally from Argentina, Claudio played 200 games in the old National Soccer League competition, and over that period was known as one of the most uncompromising central defenders in the league.

Following his retirement from playing, Claudio moved immediately into coaching and went on to hold Technical Director and Head Coach roles at a number of clubs in New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT.

He participated in the first Pro Licence coaching course held in Australia and also worked in football’s high performance space at both state and national level.

Claudio has worked with some of Australia’s most respected coaching greats, including Frank Arok, Raul Blanco, Eddie Thomson and Les Scheinflug, and was the technical film analyst for the Australian Olympic team in 2000.

He also boasts glowing references from many highly credentialled coaches and coach-educators in Australia, such as Kelly Cross, Rale Rasic, Blanco, Scheinflug and Peter Kelly.

Claudio’s depth of experience is only matched by the passion he has brought to the technical director role at Wynnum Wolves FC in his first season with the club, working with players from the Under 5s through to the first team to improve standards across the board.

John Garside

JOHN GARSIDE

GOALKEEPER COACH

We’ve been delighted to welcome vastly experienced goalkeeper coach, John Garside, as the club’s goalkeeper coach in season 2021.

John enjoyed an extensive playing career in the United Kingdom, which included playing for Doncaster Rovers, Barnsley FC and Wigan Athletic, before moving to South Australia to play professionally for a number of clubs.

He started his coaching career in 1981, having experienced no specific goalkeeper coaching during his own playing days. It has been John’s long-term ambition to change this for future goalkeepers of all ages and levels.

Moving to Queensland in 1990, John has since worked at the Brisbane Roar as assistant to Fernando Alves; was the Queensland Academy of Sport Goalkeeper Coach and has worked with many notable players including Michael Theo (Brisbane Roar first team ‘keeper, twice voted Australian goalkeeper of the Year); Andrew Redmayne (Brisbane Roar reserve and Australian U23 custodian, now with Sydney FC), Liam Reddy (formerly Brisbane Roar, now Perth Glory) and Matt Acton (Brisbane Roar, U20 national rep, now Melbourne Victory).

John has also developed young goalkeepers to elite status – Cooper Skerry, who signed a contract in 2019 with Leeds United; Nick Tubbs, a former U17 international; Ayana Aoyagi who was invited to the Australian U19 Young Matildas 23-player selection camps and recently travelled with the U20 Matildas for their Asian Qualifying matches, now contracted in the USA; Kirsten Veeren who was voted best goalkeeper outside the W-League in 2016; and Amy Higgins, who was selected for QAS and U17 Matildas squad.

ASST COACH – JACOB KRAYEM

Ben Crew has also taken charge of the club’s under 16 team in 2021 and is supported by Wynnum Wolves FC First Team player, Jacob Krayem, who is in his first year of coaching at the club and is currently completing his C Licence coach accreditation.

Jacob his senior debut at Wynnum as a 16-year-old three seasons ago. He is also in his second year of a high-performance sports degree. The two are working hand-in-hand to prepare the club’s under 16s players for the step-up to senior football in 2022 – a good fit given both are entrenched in the senior space as a coach and player.

ASST COACH – KAY KIEHLE

Jonathan has a degree in exercise and sports science and has also recently competed his teaching degree.

A C-Licence accredited coach, Jonathan has been instrumental in 2021 in moulding together a strong under 13 team with the valuable assistance and support of a newcomer to the club in 2021, Kay Kiehle, who is a passionate football person who has an extensive background over an eight-year period in junior coaching at community level. Kay holds a Senior Coaching Licence.

SAP U12

COACH – JONATHAN MILLS

Jonathan has also taken charge of the Wynnum Wolves FC under 12 SAP team in 2021, working largely with the same group of players he took charge of as 11-year-olds in the 2020 season.

By working across both age groups (U12s and U13s), Jonathan provided invaluable opportunities to the club’s peak SAP group, in a well-managed and measured way, by preparing them for the step-up to 11v11 football in the 2022 season as NPL Juniors.

SAP U11

COACH – TOM PAYNE

Tom has been coaching and managing junior teams at Wynnum Wolves for the past four years.

Still a player himself at QMF over 35s level, Tom is currently in the process of completing his C Licence coach accreditation. Tom works across the club’s SAP area as the program co-ordinator, over and above his role as the under 11 SAP coach.

He does an incredible amount of work with all Wynnum Wolves FC SAP teams and families, and has been instrumental in the continued improvement of the program over the past two seasons.

SAP U10

COACH – Josh Murphy

Josh Murphy took over coaching of the Under 10 SAP team mid-season in 2021 after joining the club as a first team player.

Josh is a passionate advocate of building strong team culture and belief at an early age, over and above his role of coaching the young players in the technical, tactical and physical aspects of the game.

Josh is relishing the opportunity to work with this young group to instil positive behaviours and mentality and a strong club culture very early in their playing journey at Wynnum Wolves FC.

SAP U9
